Beta Update
This week, we updated Bad Practice’s game mechanics, level design, and artistic cohesion. We implemented the three planned weapons in their basic form and balanced them to increase the distinction between each weapon’s usage. Moving forward, we intend to give each weapon a distinct “special attack” to further provide distinction between each weapon. To expand the depth of our gameplay, we increased the player’s arsenal to include deployables, such as shields and turrets. Our playtesters wanted the weapon cycling to be more user-friendly, so we adjusted this system to use multiple keys to allow the player more control over which weapon they use. We then reused our old cycling system to let the player cycle between their deployables with the spacebar. We finished our week by creating more levels that take advantage of these new mechanics.
We continued to work with our artist to implement backgrounds and character portraits into our game. We updated the UI and art to match a consistent color palette with consistent fonts and theming. We also updated the juice of our game to add more feedback to player actions; for example, a screen shake when taking damage. We continued work on making our tutorials match the style of the game. Moving forward, we intend to switch our tutorial system from static images that appear before the battle scenes to in-time tutorials that occur during the tutorial scene. We also plan to integrate our game’s story into the next iteration of the game.
